Spinal Cord Stimulation and You

Chronic back pain along your spinal cord can be debilitating, keeping you uncomfortable during the day and awake at night. You may spinal cord stimulationhave tried physical therapy, medications, or injections to relieve your back pain, but when non-invasive treatments have proven ineffective, it may be time to try a spinal cord stimulator.

Dr. Wilson Almonte in Victoria and Sugar Land TX offers spinal cord stimulation treatments and is here to help you evaluate if this is the right remedy for your back pain.

What Is a Spinal Cord Stimulator?

A spinal cord stimulator uses electrodes and a generator to send electrical impulses along the spinal cord to relieve pain. The electrodes are positioned between the spinal cord and vertebrae, while the generator is implanted under the skin near your abdomen or lower back. You are in control of the stimulations, using a button remote to activate the electrical impulses when you are experiencing pain. Instead of pain, you will feel a tingling sensation.

Is Spinal Cord Stimulation the Right Treatment for My Chronic Back Pain?

Spinal cord stimulation has proven effective for many in reducing back pain, including those for which surgery proved ineffective. The electrical impulses are intended to reduce pain, allowing you to rest easier, perform daily activities, and feel comfortable.

Before committing to having a generator implanted, you can try out an external version of a spinal cord stimulator. This temporary treatment uses insulated leads inserted under the skin near the spinal cord, located at a spot that best minimizes your pain. The leads will be connected to a stimulator attached to a belt and controlled by remote, allowing you to spend a few days testing out the process of using electrical impulses to alleviate pain. If you are happy with the results, you can schedule an appointment to have a permanent version implanted.
